Merton’s Big Sports Day Smashes Expectations – Again!

Merton’s third Big Sports Day was a knockout success, with over 8,000 residents heading to Morden Park for one of the biggest community events of its kind in London. Families from every corner of the borough came together to try new activities and have fun with neighbours.

Labour-run Merton Council is proud to host this annual event, which gets bigger and better every year. This year’s line-up was packed with free activities - from football, table tennis and volleyball to climbing walls, crazy golf and a bungee run. We made sure everyone could take part, with disability-inclusive sessions and activities for all ages and abilities.

Big Sports Day is just one part of our ambition to make Merton London’s first Borough of Sport. We’re investing in grassroots clubs, expanding access to green spaces, and supporting sports teams, fitness classes and inclusive events across the borough.

Councillor Caroline Cooper Marbiah, Cabinet Member for Sport and Heritage said:

I am immensely proud of the success of this year’s Big Sports Day. It was a truly inclusive celebration, bringing together more residents than ever to connect, participate, and enjoy. Thanks to the unwavering support of our partners and community organisations, we delivered our biggest event yet—with exciting new activities, including the ever-popular zipline, that encouraged everyone to get involved and try something new.”

We believe that sport and fitness should be for everyone, regardless of background or ability. We are working hard to build a borough that’s active, welcoming and full of life, where everyone has the chance to get involved.

We’re proud of what we’ve built - and we’re just getting started.
