Your Labour Team in Cannon Hill

  • Mohammad Ashraf

    Cannon Hill

Mohammad is a small business owner who first moved to Cannon Hill with his young family in 2017, and still lives in Morden today. He wanted to move to Merton because of the fantastic education on offer to his children, with every single school in the borough being rated Good or Better by Ofsted. Mohammad is passionate about helping young people into good local jobs, giving them opportunities to help them succeed through his own business as well as volunteering to help marginalised children get the best start in life. He has also campaigned to Save St Helier Hospital alongside our Member of Parliament Siobhain McDonagh as he knows how vital this hospital is for our community here in Cannon Hill.

Now that Morden town centre regeneration has been given the green light and £30million backing by Labour-run Merton Council, Mohammad is excited about how local young people will benefit from the development. Mohammad believes that as well as much needed housing for local people so young people can stay in the area they’ve grown up, Morden regeneration will deliver jobs, skill and employment for children and young people in the area.

  • Neil Davies

    Cannon Hill

Neil has lived in the area for forty years, moving here back in 1986. Throughout his time in Merton he has always been involved in the local community, having previously been Chair of his local Residents Association. Today, Neil volunteers in a care home, and he is deeply passionate about making sure that everyone can have the dignity of good care, no matter their background or circumstances. That’s why he was so pleased by the news that Labour-run Merton Council had recently received a ‘Good’ rating by independent government inspectors for its care for older and vulnerable residents, one of the only councils in London to achieve this.

After a long career in the Civil Service, Neil has developed a keen understanding and appreciation for well run public finances. He knows that Labour-run Merton Council is well run, and is always finding new ways to secure the best value for money for tax payers whilst improving services. Not only does Merton Council deliver more than its neighbours in Liberal Democrat-run Kingston for £400 less in Council Tax, but because the Labour Administration has managed the money well it has been able to deliver more of what our community wants: Pop-up Tips; free swimming for under 16s and over 65s; and a new Safer Streets Team who patrol every neighbourhood, every week to crack down on anti-social behaviour.

  • Liz Sherwood

    Cannon Hill

Liz has lived in Morden for 18 years with her family, and has always been a champion for our much-loved local parks and green spaces. She has been a volunteer with the Friends of Morden Park for many years and is currently serving as their Secretary. Alongside the committee, Liz organises a weekly group volunteering day, to plant daffodils, tend a flower bed, and do bramble cutting and litter picking in the park - no matter the weather!

Liz is pleased that Morden Park is now the home of Morden parkrun which has seen thousands of adults take part since its launch, and continues to go from strength to strength. The run was funded by Labour-run Merton Council as part of their ambition to become London’s first Borough of Sport. She is happy to see so many people given the opportunity to get active and enjoy the park which she dedicates so much time to. Following the Council-funded refurbishment of the bandstand in Morden Park, Liz and her committee organised in 2025 the return of Sunday afternoon brass band concerts and plan to have regular ones in 2026.

  • Cllr Ross Garrod

    Leader of Merton Council

Ross Garrod’s parents moved to Mitcham when he was six months old, and it has been his home ever since. Ross attended Bennedict Primary School, Priory Middle School, and Rutlish High School. After moving out of the family home, he now lives on Grove Road near to St Mark’s Academy.

Ross has represented Longthornton ward for four years and is now the Leader of Merton Council. As part of Siobhain’s Action Team, Ross has secured investment in shop fronts on the shopping parade on Northborough Road and upgraded the facilities in Oakleigh Way (refurbished tennis courts) and Rowan Road Rec (new splash pad, children’s playground, refurbished basketball court).

Ross worked with residents to open a new pocket park on Meopham Road, turning a fly tipping hotspot into an area the whole community can enjoy.

Ross is a season ticket holder for AFC Wimbledon although he admits that his main team is Aston Villa. He used to play football for a team at Three Kings Piece in Mitcham, but now most of his physical activity is in a gym – or out walking, speaking with residents.

  • Dame Siobhain McDonagh MP

    Mitcham and Morden MP

Siobhain has lived in the constituency of Mitcham and Morden her whole life and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mitcham and Morden in 1997.

Siobhain is renowned as one of the country’s hardest-working MPs, and regularly leads the list of MPs who have written the most letters, taking up thousands of new cases on behalf of constituents every year. She has led a variety of campaigns, including the opening of a new train station at Mitcham Eastfields, saving St Helier Hospital, introducing new community ‘Safer Neighbourhood’ police teams, and tackling graffiti, abandoned cars, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour.
