Merton Labour Takes Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls
Labour-run Merton Council have worked tirelessly to raise awareness, respond to violence against women and girls, and ensure that survivors feel seen, heard, and supported.
This White Ribbon Day comes as Labour-run Merton Council is preparing to publish our Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy 2026 –2029. This strategy will guide our work in supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse and all forms of gender-based violence. It focuses on five priorities: changing attitudes and behaviours, improving the safety of women and girls, early identification and help, supporting victims, survivors, and their children, and holding perpetrators to account.
Our goal is clear: to increase reporting by raising awareness and building confidence among victims, while also ensuring that prosecutions and convictions rise for crimes that too often remain hidden.
This comes as Labour-run Merton Council has recently become an official Safe Haven Borough – a major step forward in tackling violence against women and girls. Working with the Safer Business Network, the scheme is rolling out across our community to provide welcoming spaces where anyone feeling unsafe can find immediate support. With local organisations like AFC Wimbledon already signed up and more businesses joining, initiatives like these reflect Merton Labour’s commitment to keeping our borough safe and ensuring every resident feels supported.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Enforcement Cllr Edith Macauley said:
“Preventing and responding to violence against women and girls remains a priority for Merton Council. We are proud of the impactful work we’ve done to support victims and to help both men and women understand the dangers of toxic masculinity. I am especially proud that our new strategy has been shaped by the voices of women and girls across the borough.”
This White Ribbon day, Labour is responding with action.
By listening, learning, and acting with courage, we can create a community where women and girls feel safe, respected, and empowered.
