Merton Labour Steps Up Pressure to Save Local Police Stations
Merton Labour is ramping up its efforts to protect Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations, taking the campaign directly to Scotland Yard. The Leader and Deputy Leader of Labour-run Merton Council recently travelled to the Met’s headquarters to hand deliver our petitions demanding the safeguarding of both stations.
These petitions have been signed by hundreds of residents, and the Merton Labour Action Team are making sure that the concerns of our community are heard at the highest level.
Merton Labour has been fighting for years to keep both our local police stations open, and have long spoken out against the impact of cuts to policing under the Tory-Lib Dem coalition and subsequent Tory governments. Between 2010 and 2024 government cuts hollowed out frontline services and left communities across London vulnerable and put our police stations at risk.
Despite these challenges, Merton Labour has fought hard to protect our local community policing model. The fact that Merton remains one of the safest boroughs in London is no coincidence - it’s the result of strong local leadership that prioritises public safety.
Our community policing model is working, but closing either station would put that at risk. Officers would spend more time travelling and less time on the ground, making it harder to prevent crime and respond quickly.
With a Labour government committed to rebuilding community policing, we have a real opportunity to reverse the damage inflicted by years of government cuts and failures. But we can’t do it alone.
Merton Labour is stepping up the pressure and calling on Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley to guarantee the future of both Wimbledon and Mitcham stations in the upcoming Estates Review.
