Labour Continues Campaign for Breast Cancer Screening Centre in Merton

Despite Labour-run Merton Council securing funds from the NHS to provide a breast cancer scanner in the borough, Merton remains the only borough in Southwest London without a breast cancer screening centre.

Merton Labour has consistently pushed for the introduction of a breast cancer screening centre in Merton to correct this inequality of healthcare provision for women in our borough. Our Cabinet Member for Health has regularly attended local NHS Board meetings to demand answers on how the NHS is going to rectify this lack of healthcare provision for women in Merton, and has written to the Secretary of State for Health to raise the issue directly with government.

St George’s Hospital Trust have now been put in charge of delivering breast cancer screening across Southwest London. However, there is still no news about whether or when a breast cancer screening centre will be opened in Merton.

Cllr Peter McCabe, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care has said:

“This is an important issue and one which I have consistently raised with our local NHS. It is unacceptable that women in Merton are facing such health inequality and we will continue to push for a breast cancer screening site within the borough to rectify this”

With a new Labour Government committed to rebuilding the NHS and addressing health inequalities, we have a real opportunity to make our voices heard and bring about real change. That’s why we are calling on NHS South West London and the Board of St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals to rectify this issue of health inequality and deliver a breast cancer screening site in Merton as soon as possible.
