Labour-Run Merton Council Begins Planting 1,000 New Street Trees Across the Borough
You told us you wanted us to make our streets greener and more welcoming. That’s why Labour-run Merton Council is taking action and has begun planting 1,000 new street trees, starting in areas which have the lowest number of trees. It will make our streets look better, make them greener, and have the added bonus of helping clean the air too.
Merton is already one of the greenest and leafiest boroughs in London, we know how much living in such a leafy borough means to residents. We have an extensive tree planting programme that sees us planting hundreds of new trees over the coming year, and now we are committed to planting even more. The programme of street tree planting will a focus on the areas where trees have had to be removed, due to damage or disease, leaving gaps called tree pits.
The planting of 1000 new street trees is part of Labour’s four pledges to make Merton cleaner, greener, and safer for everyone.
Cllr Eleanor Stringer, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Civic Pride recently helped plant the first of 1000 new trees:
“Planting 1,000 new street trees is a real investment by Labour in the future of our neighbourhoods in Merton. We’re starting in the areas with the fewest trees, filling gaps where trees have been lost, and building on the hundreds already planted to boost biodiversity and improve air quality. This is about making our streets look better, making them greener, and about helping clean up the air we all breathe too!”
