Merton Labour Helps Save Wimbledon & Mitcham Police Stations

We are delighted to announce that the campaign to save Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations has been a success, thanks to the campaigning of our local Labour Action Teams and the many residents who have helped us by signing our petition and putting a poster up in their window.

Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations have been under threat of closure for many years because of the cuts the Conservatives inflicted on Police Stations and Services across the country between 2010 and 2024.

While Merton continues to be one of the safest areas in London, shutting either of our stations would have undermined the police’s ability to provide the strong neighbourhood policing we rely on.

Following the publication of the Metropolitan Police’s Estate Strategy, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Ross Garrod, wrote to the Mayor of London to seek confirmation about the future of Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations. We are delighted that in response, the Mayor of London confirmed both Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations will remain open.

This news follows years of campaigning from Merton Labour, including petitions, visiting New Scotland Yard, motions at Council, and lobbying directly through meetings with the Met and the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. This is a huge victory for everyone who joined Labour’s campaign and goes to show what we can achieve with a Labour Council, Labour Mayor, and Labour Government working together to keep our communities safe.

Abbey Labour Team member, Kara Abrams said:

“It’s fantastic that it has been confirmed that both Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations will stay open. This is a huge victory for everyone who joined Labour’s campaign to safeguard the future of our Police Stations and keep our borough as one of the safest in London. Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign - this goes to show what local action can achieve.”

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ross Garrod said:

“Now that we have certainty that both Wimbledon and Mitcham Police Stations will remain open, we can redouble our focus on keeping Merton one of the safest areas in London.

“Labour-run Merton Council will continue working closely with the Police to keep our area safe. We’ve already upgraded and expanded our 24hour CCTV network, and now we have deployed our new Safer Streets Team to patrol every neighbourhood, every week to crack down on anti-social behaviour. Together, we will keep Merton safe.”
