Inspiring the Next Generation in Merton: Labour Champions Youth Engagement

Labour Councillors delivered a series of educational sessions to primary and secondary schools across the borough as part of UK Parliament Week 2025.

Merton is home to some of the best schools in the country – with all our schools rated good or better by Ofsted, and three primary schools ranked in the top 10 in London. In striving for the best for Merton’s children and young people, Labour-run Merton Council is ensuring that pupils from every corner of the borough receive a top-quality education and the best start in life.

Aimed at increasing the levels of engagement and understanding of democratic processes in the UK amongst schoolchildren, Parliament Week is an important annual initiative that takes place in schools right across the country. In total, Councillors delivered 17 sessions in classrooms across Merton, getting children and young people involved in conversations about how our local democracy works.

Our young people’s voices are incredibly powerful, and Merton Labour are not only committed to giving them the very best opportunities but ensuring that they are involved in the choices that impact them too.

Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Cllr Usaama Kaweesa said:

“It’s fantastic to be able to support Parliament Week UK in their campaign to increase political understanding amongst our nation’s children and young people. Merton Labour has always prioritised giving our children and young people a voice, and we’re proud to be increasing their awareness of political issues that affect them.”

With the national Labour Government having committed to delivering Votes at 16 for national elections, initiatives such as Parliament Week will ensure that children in Merton and across the country are given the opportunity to get involved in politics, democracy, and the decisions that shape their future.
