Labour Secure Big Screen Showing of Wimbledon Championships in Wandle Park

Deputy Leader of Merton Council and local Wandle Labour Councillor Eleanor Stringer has successfully campaigned to deliver an additional Big Screen to Wandle Park during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships this summer, allowing even more residents to experience the buzz of the biggest tennis event in the world.

For the past three years, Labour-run Merton Council has worked in partnership with the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to bring the energy and excitement of Centre Court to the community by showing the Wimbledon Championships on Big Screens around the borough.

The free Big Screen showings in Canons House and Grounds in Mitcham and Morden Park, along with the screen supported by AELTC and Love Wimbledon in Wimbledon Piazza, have been a huge hit with local communities in recent years. Not only do they bring the incredible Centre Court atmosphere directly to residents, but the Wimbledon Big Screen showings have proven to be great way to bring friends and neighbours together to take pride in what our amazing borough has to offer.

In what is a big community win for residents near to Wandle Park, Merton Labour are delighted that the AELTC have agreed to put on this additional screen during the Championships.

Councillor Stringer said:

“I welcome this commitment from AELTC. Central to our ambition to become London Borough of Sport is our belief that nobody, regardless of their background or experience, should be excluded from getting active and involved. While not everyone will be able to make it to the Championships in person, these screens mean that thousands of local residents can feel part of the crowd by watching live in their local park..”

The 2025 Championships are set to take place from the 30th June to the 13th July. We look forward to everyone being able to share in the magic of Wimbledon this summer.
