Labour Delivers Much Needed Investment into Local Hospitals
The Labour government has announced new funding for hospitals in South London to carry out major works to improve the comfort of patients and improve the infrastructure of the hospitals, including at St George’s (£9million), Kingston (£11million) and Epsom and St Helier (£12million) hospitals.
This follows a longstanding campaign from Merton Labour calling for investment into our local NHS to fix disrepair, modernise facilities, and boost care for patients.
After more than a decade of Conservative and Coalition mismanagement that left the NHS on the brink, this major funding boost follows Labour’s national commitment to rebuild the NHS and reduce hospital waiting times.
Across the country, waiting lists are now beginning to fall, and here in Merton, investment is not only reaching hospitals, but GP surgeries too. A recent announcement from the government means that several local GP surgeries are set to receive funding to help increase the number of available appointments.
The more than £32million investment into St George’s, Kingston, and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals and the new funding for local GP surgeries, which will be spent in the 2025/26 financial year, is proof that Labour in power—locally and nationally—delivers for the NHS and for the people of Merton.
We welcome this investment as a sign that real change is possible when local Labour leadership works hand in hand with a Labour government. But after years of decline under the Conservatives, we know rebuilding the NHS will take time.
Merton Labour will keep standing up for our NHS and will continue to campaign for the resources our local health services need to cut down on waiting times, end the 8am rush for appointments, and keep services local to you and your family.
