Summer Sorted: Free Family Fun in Merton
We know the summer holidays can be tough for working parents. That’s why Labour-run Merton Council are continuing to deliver fun, free and local events and activities all summer long. We want every child in Merton to enjoy their summer, and for every parent to feel supported.
From swimming and sports to storytelling and crafts, there’s something for everyone - even for Mums, Dads and Grandparents!
Under 16s and Over 65s Swim Free
We’ve made swimming free for under 16s and over 65s at all three of our leisure centres—Wimbledon, Morden and the Canons in Mitcham. This initiative is a part of our mission to break down barriers to sport, get more residents active , and make Merton London’s first Borough of Sport.
Library Events Across the Borough
Our local libraries are hosting free events all summer long, from reading challenges and storytelling to crafts and workshops. These sessions are fun, educational, and the majority are completely free of charge.
Some resident favourites include Exotic Animal Encounters, Summertime Stories, Dino Fossil Dig, Film Club, Lego & Puzzle Club and more! Some activities do require booking, so make sure to visit https://libraries.merton.gov.uk/events to plan ahead.
Holiday Activities and Food Programme
HAF is a government-funded initiative that provides free activities and meals during school holidays for children. This means that children who receive pupil premium or are from priority groups can access free camps and clubs. In Merton these include multi-sports and arts at Liberty Primary, Capoeira with Arte Pura, creative workshops, and community-led play days.
We are one of the only councils in the country to run these programmes during half terms in addition to the summer holidays, reflecting our commitment to supporting parents and families year-round.
Acacia Adventure Playground
Adventures await at Acacia Playground, open to children aged 5–15. This outdoor space includes treehouses, trampolines, a fire pit and more. With staff supervision and extended hours over summer, it’s the perfect safe space for imaginative play.
Children’s Day in Parliament
Our local Labour MP Siobhain McDonagh is once again hosting a Parliamentary Children’s Day, giving families the opportunity to visit Westminster for a tour, quiz, and drawing competition. You can register via Siobhain’s office at 020 8542 4835.
Youth Clubs and Family Hubs
Our local Youth Centres in Pollards Hill and Phipps Bridge offer a range of activities, advice and support for children and young people. These include Cooking, Sports activities, Arts and crafts and Holiday activities. Older kids and young people can also access IT suites, career workshops and Music production workshops.
For parents juggling work and childcare, these hubs offer vital community space. There are plenty more services on offer, including for those with special educational needs and disabilities, which you can discover at https://directories.merton.gov.uk/kb5/merton/directory/results.page?youthchannel=1_8
Providing free and accessible activities for families in our Borough is a part of our commitment to building a better Merton for all.
Merton Labour will keep delivering for families, this summer and beyond.
