Merton Labour Take Action to Protect Maternity and Women’s Health Services at St Helier Hospital

Merton Labour have made clear their strong opposition to plans to reduce, relocate, or close maternity services at St Helier Hospital.

Recent reports indicate that St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Trust are considering proposals to temporarily close, relocate, or reduce Maternity Services at St Helier hospital due to serious concerns regarding the condition of the estate.  There have also been reports that these issues may affect women’s health services including gynaecology, neonatal ward, and specialised care including the Assisted Conception Unit, and emergency gynaecology services.

Alongside Dame Siobhain McDonagh DBE MP, Merton Labour has taken immediate action to oppose these plans. The Leader of Merton Council, Cllr Ross Garrod, and Merton's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Cllr Peter McCabe, have written to the Trust, demanding that residents, Healthwatch, Members of Parliament, Councillors, Merton Council, and other local partners are properly consulted on any proposed changes.

Merton Labour also passed a motion at the most recent Full Council meeting, reaffirming the Council’s strong opposition to any reduction or relocation of Maternity Services from St Helier Hospital.

Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Cllr Peter McCabe said: “For three decades we have fought to protect all services at St Helier Hospital, and we will continue that fight by pushing for rigorous scrutiny of these latest proposals.”
