Merton Labour Delivers Major Investment into New Sports Facilities

Merton Council has agreed a new long- term Playing Pitch Strategy that sets out a major expansion of sports facilities across the borough, including a brand-new multimillion pound sports hall at Morden Leisure Centre. This comes as Liberal-Democrat Run Kingston Council have only just begun building their new leisure centre after years of delays and snowballing costs.

Thanks to Labour-run Merton Council’s Borough of Sport initiative, participation in local clubs has skyrocketed in recent years, with more people in Merton becoming active than ever before, and the number of sports clubs in the borough more than doubling in recent years.

This new plan responds to the rising demand for grassroots sport and ensures local residents have access to high quality places to play for years to come.

Merton residents are already benefitting from 47 newly refurbished gold-standard tennis courts, cricket pitch upgrades, and fantastic swimming facilities across the borough’s three leisure centres – where under 16s and over 65s can swim completely free of charge!

Building on Merton’s sporting legacy, Labour-run Merton Council has now committed to building a new sports hall at Morden Leisure Centre, four new Multi Use Games Areas across the borough, improving the quality of current sites, and investing in modern, accessible facilities - allowing more residents to take part in sports and activities.

Investments like these are only possible due to the Merton Labour’s careful management of council finances – allowing us to deliver more of what residents want to see.

While our neighbours in Liberal Democrat run Kingston are still waiting on their leisure centre to be built, residents in Labour-run Merton can enjoy access to state-of-the-art sporting facilities, with even more exciting upgrades coming just around the corner.
