Merton Labour Celebrates Milestone as 10 Parks Earn Prestigious Green Flag Awards

One of London’s leafiest Boroughs hits a new milestone, following Labour-run Merton Council’s pledge to make Merton cleaner, greener, and safer.

Merton has now achieved a record ten Green Flag Awards—marking the highest number in the borough’s history and showcasing the strength of our parks and green spaces.

This national recognition, awarded by Keep Britain Tidy, is the benchmark for quality, safety and management of public green spaces across the UK. Two parks, Holland Garden and Haydons Road Recreation Ground, have joined the prestigious list for the first time, whilst Cannizaro Park, Colliers Wood Rec, Canons House & Grounds, Abbey Rec, Dundonald Rec, John Innes Park, Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field, and South Park Gardens all maintained their Green Flag status.

Our parks continue to rank among residents’ most valued features of local life, and with over 115 green spaces, our borough remains one of the leafiest boroughs in London.

This milestone achievement is a result of the hard work of the Council’s parks team, the local Friends groups, and the many wonderful volunteers who work so hard to look after Merton’s much-loved parks and green spaces. We are delivering across the board on the areas that matter most to local residents, and these awards showcase just how much Merton’s green spaces have to offer.

In Merton, where every resident is within a 5-minute walk from a green space, Labour’s leadership speaks for itself.

Ten award winning parks, one greener borough.
