Merton Achieves Record 11 Green Flag Awarded Parks

2026 is proving to be another record-breaking year for Merton’s parks and greenspaces, with Brenley Park in Figges Marsh receiving its first-ever Green Flag Award.

Merton is now home to 11 Green Flag Award-winning parks, the highest number ever in the borough!

Alongside Brenley Park, Merton’s 10 other Green Flag parks - Abbey Recreation Ground, Cannizaro Park, Canons House & Grounds, Colliers Wood Recreation Ground, Dundonald Recreation Ground, John Innes Park, Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field, South Park Gardens, Haydons Road Recreation Ground and Holland Garden – have all retained their Green Flag status for 2026.

Green Flag Awards are the international gold standard for well-managed, publicly accessible parks and green spaces. To achieve accreditation, parks are judged against eight key criteria, including biodiversity, community involvement, accessibility, maintenance, safety, environmental quality and heritage.

These achievements are made possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of Merton’s Friends of Parks groups, volunteers, community organisations, and the Council’s Parks and Greenspaces team.

Cabinet member for Cleaner Streets, Environment and Transport, Cllr Stuart Neaverson said:

“Merton is already one of the capital’s greenest and leafiest boroughs, and now, with more award-winning parks than ever before, it continues to be one of the best places to live and work in London. It is this administration’s ambition to achieve even more Green Flag awards, and with our continued investment in our parks and greenspaces, we look forward to seeing them go from strength to strength.”
