Campaign Victory! Merton Labour Saves Local Pub From Demolition

We’re delighted to announce that the campaign to save The Trafalgar Pub in South Wimbledon from demolition has been a success, thanks to the dedication of local residents and the local petition from Merton Labour that gathered over 500 signatures.

Earlier this year, a planning application was brought forward that would have seen The Trafalgar demolished. The proposal sparked widespread concern among residents and pub-goers, who feared the loss of one of Merton’s last remaining true freehouses - a historic venue and proud winner of CAMRA’s South West London Pub of the Year 2024.

But Cllr Mike Brunt and the Merton Labour Action Team quickly sprang into action, launching a local petition and working closely with residents, speaking up for our much-loved community asset.

Now, the Council planning team has refused the application, recognising the strong objections raised and the pub’s cultural and historic importance to the area.

Speaking after the decision, Cllr Mike Brunt said:

“This is a victory not just for those of us who enjoy a pint at The Trafalgar, but for everyone in our community who believes in protecting our local heritage, and standing up for what makes Merton special.

I’m incredibly proud of the residents who joined this campaign and grateful to everyone who took the time to make their voices heard. We’ve shown what local action can achieve.”

Although The Trafalgar Pub has been saved for now, the Council’s decision could still be overturned if the applicant chooses to appeal the decision, which would be reviewed by the Planning Inspectorate. The developer could also choose to submit a new planning application on the site.

That’s why it’s still important that we make our voice heard to save our local pub.

Please sign and share the petition to protect The Trafalgar Pub.

The Trafalgar’s future is now more secure, and local Labour councillors will continue working to with residents to protect local heritage assets.

Thank you to everyone who supported the campaign.

Together, we have helped to save The Trafalgar Pub.
