£57m Secured for St Helier Hospital

Thanks to the campaigning of local residents alongside Merton Labour Councillors and Siobhain McDonagh MP, St Helier hospital has been able to secure £57million in funding from NHS London and the national Labour government to expand and improve the Emergency Department. 

This vital funding will mean that St Helier Hospital will be able to continue providing emergency care to the 250 people who arrive at the hospital every day. The funding will also go towards modernising and improving the hospital, with plans including: 

• Enlarging and improving the Emergency Department with better facilities 

• Building a new Urgent Treatment centre to meet growing demand 

• Expanding same-day emergency care services 

• Upgrading the infrastructure at the hospital 

The announcement of this new funding will be welcome news for countless local residents, including the hundreds who signed Merton Labour’s petition to save St Helier hospital. 

Cllr Peter McCabe, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said: “After years of neglect from Conservative and Liberal Democrat Coalition and subsequent Conservative governments, it’s fantastic the receive the news that the Labour Government is providing £57m to improve the Emergency Department at St Helier, so it can continue to serve local families for years to come.”
