Advancing Step Free Access in Merton
For many public transport users, accessibility makes the difference between going out and staying in. Step free access isn’t just about improved accessibility for wheelchair users, but also for those with limited mobility, people with pushchairs or those carrying heavy luggage. Step free access is vital to ensuring all residents are able to travel safely, comfortably and with dignity.
Here’s how Labour has helped improve step free access in Merton:
-
TOOTING & MOTSPUR PARK STATION
Labour-run Merton Council contributed 10% of the costs to upgrading Motspur Park Station, which helped make the project viable and deliver step free access to the station in January 2025.
And after years of campaigning, Labour successfully helped bring step free access to Tooting station – with lifts opening for users in February 2025.
-
RAYNES PARK STATION
Following campaigning from Merton Labour, we are a step closer to getting Step Free Access at Raynes Park Station.
As part of the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ scheme, we have secured funding from the Government to progress Step Free Access at Raynes Park Station into the design stage. This is on top of our decision to commit £500,000 towards the project.
-
HAYDONS ROAD STATION
Labour-run Merton Council is also pushing for step free access to be provided at Haydons Road station, confirming that we have funding ready to invest in the projects alongside Network Rail to make the stations accessible. .
-
MORDEN TUBE STATION
Following years of campaigning by the local community and the local Labour Party, Morden Tube Station has been selected as part of a £3million TfL programme to increase toilet accessibility on the tube. As a result, the toilets at Morden Tube Station were officially opened in February 2026.

COLLIERS WOOD TUBE STATION
The Deputy Mayor of London recently announced Colliers Wood is being considered for upgrades to introduce step free access. Labour-run Merton Council has welcomed this feasibility study and is campaigning with local residents to show the strength of feeling in the community for bringing accessibility to Colliers Wood Tube Station.
